RESEARCH GOVERNANCE
RESEARCH GOVERNANCE
Research Governance at g² Insight Lab provides the institutional framework within which research programmes, methodologies, publications and related research activity are developed.
The Research Handbook v2.0 is the constitutional governance document of the Institute. It sets the common principles, expectations and research lifecycle that govern work conducted under g² Insight Lab.
Its purpose is not to prescribe every methodological step. It exists to protect the integrity of the wider research system and ensure that supporting work remains consistent with the Institute’s research standards.
INTEGRITY
Research claims should remain proportionate to the evidence that supports them.
TRANSPARENCY
Reasoning, uncertainty, revision and research development should remain visible.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Research should be open to challenge, correction and governance throughout its lifecycle.
Governance protects the conditions under which research can remain credible.
Research governance at g² Insight Lab is built around a layered institutional framework rather than a single document.
RESEARCH HANDBOOK
The constitutional governance document for research conducted under the Institute.
RESEARCH STANDARDS
Common expectations for rigour, transparency, evidential discipline and research conduct.
RESEARCH PROTOCOLS
Operational guidance for particular types of research activity where more specific procedure is required.
METHODOLOGY & INSTRUMENT DOCUMENTATION
Method-specific documents that sit beneath the wider governance framework and must remain consistent with it.
PUBLICATION GOVERNANCE
Processes for versioning, revision, authorship, status and preservation of the formal research record.
RESEARCH ACTIVITY
Projects, studies and outputs are expected to operate within the same institutional framework rather than outside it.
The Handbook explicitly establishes itself as the foundation for research programmes, standards, protocols, instrument manuals, publications and institutional governance, with supporting documents required to remain consistent with it.
One framework. Different research activities. Consistent standards.
The Institute’s research governance is guided by a small set of core principles.
OBSERVATION BEFORE EXPLANATION
Describe what the evidence shows before moving to interpretation.
TRANSPARENCY OF REASONING
Make the route from evidence to conclusion visible.
PROPORTIONATE CONFIDENCE
Match the strength of a claim to the strength of the evidence.
SYSTEMATIC INQUIRY
Use structured methods rather than intuition alone.
REPRODUCIBILITY
Research should be documented clearly enough to support scrutiny and replication where appropriate.
INTELLECTUAL INDEPENDENCE
Conclusions should not be shaped by commercial, institutional or personal convenience.
CONSTRUCTIVE SCIENTIFIC CRITIQUE
Challenge is treated as part of research development, not as a threat to it.
CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT
Methods, documents and research positions may be revised as evidence and understanding develop.
Rigour is not a style. It is a way of working.
Governance at g² Insight Lab is intended to remain active throughout the research lifecycle, not simply sit behind the work as policy.
In practice, this means research should be developed within clear institutional boundaries, documented appropriately, reviewed as it evolves, and revised where evidence or methodological challenge requires it.
Supporting standards, protocols, methodology documents and publications remain subordinate to the Research Handbook, which takes precedence where inconsistency arises. Research Handbook- g² Insight L…
In practice, governance means:
clear research status and scope
visible evidential boundaries
documented methods and revisions
proportionate claims
preservation of the publication record
openness to critique and correction
Good governance does not slow inquiry down. It keeps inquiry trustworthy.
