RESEARCH PROGRAMME 02
RESEARCH PROGRAMME 02
Science of Investigative Reasoning examines how people move from incomplete, uncertain or conflicting information toward conclusions that can be justified.
The programme focuses on the structures of investigation itself: how observations are recorded, how evidence is organised, how explanations are developed and compared, and how conclusions should respond to challenge or new information.
Its concern is not simply whether an investigation reaches an answer, but whether the reasoning used to reach that answer is visible, disciplined and open to revision.
OBSERVATION
What has actually been observed, recorded or established?
EVIDENCE
How should information be organised, compared and weighted?
CHALLENGE
What happens when another explanation fits the evidence?
Good investigation makes its reasoning available for scrutiny.
Science of Investigative Reasoning is concerned with the structure of inquiry itself.
OBSERVATION
How should observations be separated from interpretation?
EVIDENCE ORGANISATION
How can information be structured so that reasoning remains traceable?
COMPETING HYPOTHESES
How should alternative explanations be developed and compared?
REASONING VISIBILITY
Can another person follow how a conclusion was reached?
UNCERTAINTY
How should gaps, ambiguity and conflicting information affect confidence?
CHALLENGE
What happens when evidence does not fit the preferred explanation?
REVISION
When should an investigator change, weaken or abandon a conclusion?
RELIABILITY
What makes an investigative process more consistent, transparent and reproducible?
The programme studies investigation as a process that should remain open to scrutiny, challenge and revision.
As the programme develops, Science of Investigative Reasoning will examine how investigative processes can be made more transparent, challengeable and methodologically robust.
Particular attention will be given to the relationship between evidence, reasoning, alternative explanations and revision under uncertainty.
The programme will develop through formal research questions, working papers and other governed research outputs as appropriate.
Status: Programme development.
Science of Investigative Reasoning sits between Philosophy of Inquiry and Complex Human Systems.
Philosophy of Inquiry asks what can responsibly be known.
SIR asks how an investigation should reason toward that knowledge.
Complex Human Systems examines the systems being investigated.
Together, they form the core research logic of g² Insight Lab.
Science of Investigative Reasoning is currently in development.
The programme has not yet formally launched. Its research direction, questions and publication pathway are being developed within the governance framework of g² Insight Lab.
Future outputs may include working papers, conceptual papers and other governed research publications as the programme matures.
Programme status: In development.
